The True ICEWORM Story

The truth about iceworms.

It's hard to believe anything could live in the ice, but some creatures actually make glaciers their homes. One of these creatures is the iceworm. Iceworms look just like earthworms, but are about the size of your pinky finger.

They're easiest to find just before it starts getting dark at night. This is when the worms wiggle their way to the top of the ice, looking for dinner.

They eat pollen and other plant materials that blow onto the ice. Doesn't sound like much of a meal, does it?

Iceworms are so small, they're hard to see.

Scientists say only a small number of glaciers have ice worms. In fact, few people have actually seen them. They are very sensitive to the sun and die if it gets much warmer than freezing.

They will also die if you touch them with your warm hands so don't pick them up! Iceworms like to spend the day buried in the ice where it's 32 F. Freezing is the perfect temperature for these creatures.

This iceworm looks like a piece of thread tied in a knot.
